East Midlands LibDem Euro-MP welcomes calls for stricter animal protection and welfare rules
The European Parliament has adopted a resolution by a large majority calling for stricter animal welfare rules across the European Union. The report calls on the Commission to propose plans for animal protection labelling, to ban seal hunting and imports of 'cruelty products' such as merchandise made out dog and cat fur into the European Union.
Bill Newton Dunn, Liberal Democrat Euro-MP for the East Midlands welcomed the report, saying:
"This report calls for concrete measure to ensure the all animals - not just farm animals - across the European Union are treated well and taken care of. With imports of illegal products made out of cat and dog fur increasing and horrible events such as dog and cock fighting still taking place, it is vital that the European Union takes a strong stand against the maltreatment of animals."
"What is interesting is that when I was first elected as an MEP, most continental MEPs were uninterested in animal welfare issues. Now the majority of MEPs are very concerned and vote in favour of more protection."
The resolution will now be sent to the European Commission asking it to put forward a legislative proposal.
